Tsunami Evacuation Simulation

Japan experiences earthquakes far more frequently than most countries, and its coastal areas face the constant threat of tsunamis. The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake made it widely recognized that hardware measures alone — such as building or raising seawalls — have their limits. In recent years, evacuation simulation, which makes it possible to predict human casualties, has been gaining importance as a software-side countermeasure, and many simulation methods have been proposed. Our laboratory develops tsunami inundation prediction and evacuation simulation using one of these approaches: the multi-agent model.
